[October 25th, 2022] -- Hazelview is pleased to announce the launch of the second Hazelview Sustainable Cities Challenge, in partnership with Enactus Canada. Hazelview first launched their partnership with Enactus Canada in October 2021, as part of their commitment to supporting sustainability education. After a successful first year of the program, we are pleased to announce the launch of year 2 of the partnership for 2022-2023, including the renewal of our gold-level sponsorship.
Enactus Canada works with 70+ universities and colleges across Canada and rallies the best and brightest students who see business and entrepreneurship as a way to address social, environmental, and economic issues. With the help of Hazelview, students receive the opportunity to create and implement community empowerment projects and business ventures geared towards solving pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges.
Through the Hazelview Sustainable Cities Challenge, 6 selected student teams will be empowered to develop and deliver innovative and effective projects that make urban multi-residential buildings more socially and/or environmentally sustainable. This could include projects that advance technological innovations such as eco-friendly building materials, green roofs, energy savings technologies, and waste management solutions, or social projects such as educational programs or programming that provides social supports for residents and tenants.
In the 2022-2023 academic year, the 6 teams will each receive a project grant of $2,500 and 2 Team Advisor from Hazelview. Based on the outcomes of the Enactus teams’ initiatives, along with the quality of their Final Impact Reports and presentations at the Final Round of Competition, 3 Enactus teams will be awarded prize money to help further accelerate their projects, which will be presented at the 2023 Enactus Canada National Exposition:
- Best Project ($4,000)
- Runner-Up ($3,000)
- Second Runner-Up ($2,000)
In year 1 of the program, the Enactus team from University of Ottawa was awarded the 2022 Hazelview Sustainable Cities Project Accelerator “Best Project” title for launching Poly, an initiative that enables local, community-led plastic recycling via manufacturing and operating systems that allow individuals to recycle plastic without the need for expensive municipal infrastructure. Thanks to the Poly project, 600lbs of GHG emissions was avoided and 45kg of waste was diverted in the 2021-2022 academic year.
We are looking forward to this opportunity to further mobilize emerging leaders to help tackle Hazelview’s social and environmental priorities, while fostering positive relationships with a group of ambitious youth.
