Low Tech Ways to Stay Cool

Share:

There are a number of easy ways to keep cool this summer in Guelph. While weather forecasters aren’t predicting the scorching temperatures experienced last summer, it’s still important to get ready for what comes with the warmer weather of the season.

Stay cool and comfortable inside and out of your home. Today, the Hazelview Properties blog is covering a number of tips to stay cool in Guelph in the summer:

  • Dress in layers. Even on the warmer days put on multiple pieces. Breezy and loose fitting cotton clothing are a great option for the summer. Peel off layers as the day goes for additional comfort.
  • Keep feet in sandal-ready shape and get those toes out of hot and sweaty shoes made for cooler seasons. Buy a few pair of cheapie flip-flops for the season and designate a pair for indoor-only use.
  • For hotter evenings, a quick cool shower will chill your core temperature before bed.
  • Switch out synthetic sheets for light cotton ones.
  • Ditch the winter-ready comforters or duvets and replace with lighter materials such as cottons and linens.
  • Keep the lights off and shades drawn around your apartment.
  • Sweat out the heat by prepping a spicy recipe; go heavy on the tabasco or sriracha sauce.
  • Hydration is key during sunny days. Keep lots of chilled water in the fridge. Instead of using plastic bottles, purchase glass bottles with stoppers or a large pitcher. For those who don’t like plain water, add sliced citrus, mint and cucumber for a burst of flavour.
  • Get outside, get social and visit a public pool or splash pad to keep cool. Lyon Park (299 York Rd.) has an excellent outdoor pool and play area. For the kiddos (or the kids at heart) there are also a number splash pads free for use in the city. Downtown, the Guelph Market Square also features an interactive water feature.
  • Enjoy the Speed River and rent a canoe or kayak for a leisurely paddle. Try the full 10-kilometre adventure or make your own shorter trek.
  • Take the twenty-five minute drive to the Elora Gorge. This beautiful park features shaded hiking trails and river tubing. Purchase a wristband, rent a helmet, life jacket and tube and let the river take you for an exciting ride down the Grand River.
  • Treat yourself to a cup of ice cream, gelato or frozen yogurt. Guelph has some great spots for these ice cold desserts: check out the Boathouse Tea RoomLick’s Burgers & Ice Cream or the indulgent options at Marble Slab Creamery.
  • Get out of the apartment but skip the sweltering sun outdoors, walk the mall and browse the stores at nearby Stone Road Mall in Guelph.
