Ottawa comes alive during the winter. It's home to a hearty bunch who refuse to let the chill in the air dampen their winter spirit. There may be no better way to glide through a cold winter's day than to lace up a pair of skates and hit the ice. Here's where to skate in Ottawa.
Refrigerated ice surfaces
In addition to the many public outdoor rinks in Ottawa, the city also has four refrigerated ice surfaces:
- Jim Tubman Chevrolet Rink
- Rink of Dreams
- Lansdowne Park Skating Court
- Ben Franklin Place Skating Rink (101 Centrepointe Drive).
The rinks are usually open between November and April. The shacks and changing facilities are closed as of this writing. Please check here for updates.
Rideau Canal Skateway
The Rideau Canal Skateway runs 7.8 km from downtown to Dow's Lake. It's the largest skating rink in the world. Gliding over the frozen canal is on the winter to-do list for everyone in Ottawa. Take a break and get toasty as you warm yourself by the fire at one of the rest areas with a hot drink and a tasty snack. The skateway is usually open from February to mid-March, weather permitting.
Patinage en Foret
Escape to a winter wonderland less than an hour outside of Ottawa. At Patinage en Foret (9 Montee Beausoleil, Lac des Loups, QC) you can skate through the forest and stop and warm up at the firepits and heated outdoor bathrooms. Non skaters can snowshoe or walk on designated paths. Patinage hopes to open on December 20th, weather permitting. Tickets are $14.
