Five Great Places within walking distance of 160 Smith Street

Now that summer is here, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of Winnipeg’s great walkable neighbourhoods. Here are a few picks for five great places within walking distance of Hazelview Properties’ 160 Smith in downtown Winnipeg.  160 Smith achieved a Walkscore ranking of 93 or Walker’s Paradise which means that day-to-day errands don’t require a car.

1. Mondragon Bookstore & Coffee House (91 Albert Street)
This place is delicious and so much more than a bookstore and coffee house. Here, the crunchier folk collide with the suits over the lunch time rush.  Mondragon’s innovative vegan food even appeals to those who don’t adhere to the diet. The Dragon Bowl salad will win over anyone who doubts that statement.  And, yes, southern fried tofu is a real thing! Mondragon’s bookstore features materials that focus on radical topics relating to queer issues, health, vegetarianism, feminism, Marxism and more. Mondragon is also a great neighbourhood option for a grocery store and deli. Whenever possible, Mondragon sources organic and local produce. It’s just under a fifteen-minute walk to Mondragon or about ten minutes on Winnipeg Transit.

2. VJ’s Drive-In (170 Main Street)
A Winnipeg institution, VJ’s is the spot for old fashioned burgers, hotdogs, fries and more. This spot is renowned throughout all of the prairies for having the best milkshakes. The staff is friendly but don’t have time for chit-chat. After all, this is a busy spot and there are always more customers to come. Take your order to go or claim one of the nearby picnic tables. VJ’s is a five-minute walk from the Residences on York.

This old school spot doesn’t have a website and the Facebook page hasn’t been updated in ages. But any resident of Winnipeg owes it to themselves to stop by VJ’s at least once.

3. Toad Hall Toys (54 Arthur Street)
Kids young and old love this spot for good reason. It’s packed to the brim with classic toys and books that appeal to everyone. Toad Hall is Manitoba’s oldest independent toy retailer and has been operating since 1977.  Named for the classic kid’s book, ‘The Wind in the Willows’ this store is a gem of Winnipeg. Stop by for a quick browse or spend a full afternoon here with the kids (or with kids at heart).

4. The Forks
The Forks is about a twelve-minute walk away from 160 Smith. Located where the Red and Assiniboine rivers cross paths, the Forks is known as a meeting place for residents of the city. The Forks has tons of shopping, dining options, green space and historical sites.  The Forks also features an excellent year-round market and there’s always an event going on here. Although it’s not open yet, visitors can check out a walking tour of the site of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.  Explore the Broadway Promenade – a tucked away path that offers great views of the city.
