The Blue Mountain – Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area is a stunning natural paradise that is located on the edge of Metro Halifax. It’s over 2,000 hectares in size and contains over a dozen interconnected lakes. Birch Cove Canoe Trail
The Birch Cove Lakes Canoe Trail is an eight-lake canoe route throughout Blue Mountain – Birch Cove Lakes with portages. Adventurers can enjoy this preserved wilderness area from both their canoes and through the intertwining hiking paths and trails. There are also opportunities for swimming along the way in designated spots throughout the eight-lake route.
Animal Watching
Blue Mountain – Birch Cove Lakes is home to over 150 species of birds alone including loons, ospreys, pileated woodpeckers and more. It is also a main habitat for the endangered mainland moose and a number of other amazing animal creatures. With its scenic views and natural setting, the area offers a range of exceptional outdoor education for young and old.
There are a number of trails for hikers of all skill levels throughout the Blue Mountain – Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area. The Kearney Lake Trails are just one option and offer a rugged 2.5-kilometer woodland path with winding pathways and great nature views. This trail is rated as moderate plus, meaning it is not suitable for beginners and young children. This particular hike features a few steep ridges, so make sure to wear proper hiking gear to keep safe.
