There are many great reasons to move to Winnipeg. The employment options are vast – from construction work to the healthcare sector, manufacturing jobs to the growing IT sector – and it's fairly easy to find employment. The cost of living is relatively low, making the quality of life high. Aside from these practical reasons for relocating, don't forget the fact that it's fun to live here. If you're planning a move, here are a few of our favourite things to do in The Peg.
Festival festivities
Winnipeg is a city that knows how to celebrate! There are a variety of fun Winnipeg festivals to enjoy. One of the most famous festivals in town is the Winnipeg Folk Festival. This annual outdoor extravaganza is a celebration of culture and music held in beautiful Birds Hill Provincial Park each July. We can't wait to kick up our heels at events like this once the pandemic passes.
Culture
Arts and culture are key to the true Winnipeg experience. There's no shortage of enriching options to explore here. There's always something new to see and hear at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (the WAG) or the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall. You can also tour the many smaller art galleries of the Exchange District. You can learn a lot by paying the Canadian Museum for Human Rights a visit – it's the world's first museum dedicated to human rights. It also happens to be an architectural masterpiece!
Shopping
Shopping in Winnipeg is so much more than the gathering of goods and groceries! Take a tour with your taste buds at Hargrave Street Market. Support local farmers and merchants at
Le Marché St. Norbert Farmers' Market. The Forks Market is a mandatory Winnipeg experience, with its never-ending supply of shopping, dining and entertainment options.
The Forks
The Forks is so much more than a market. This meeting place of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers has served as a meeting area for people for over 6,000 years! Beginning with early Aboriginal peoples, followed by fur-trading settlers and then immigrants from around the globe, The Forks is a place unlike any other and one of the most beautiful public spaces in the city.
It is impossible to take in all that The Forks have to offer in a single day. You'll be back for more! Embrace the invigorating chill of "Winterpeg" at Arctic Glacier Winter Park. You can skate the trails, take a toboggan run or try your hand at Crokicurl – a game invented right here in Winnipeg!
The great outdoors
Whether you're looking for some family fun on the toboggan hills and winter slides of Winnipeg, or cross-country skiing the 15 kms of groomed trails at Windsor Park Nordic Centre, the great outdoors is always calling! Winter, spring, summer or fall, you can look forward to endless recreation options. Hit the hiking trails at FortWhyte, do some birding at Oak Hammock Marsh or find your way through the maze at A Maze in Corn. During the winter months, the walls of the maze transform into the world's largest snow maze. Amazing!
If you would rather climb ice walls than navigate your way around them, you can pick your way to the icy peak of the Ice Climbing Tower in St. Boniface. You will be rewarded with some sweeping views of the city at the summit!
The great indoors
If winter's chill has you climbing the walls, you can reach new heights (at room temperature) at indoor rock-climbing studios including The Hive and Vertical Adventures.
You can escape the everyday with a visit to one of Winnipeg's escape rooms, where you and your crew will have to solve puzzles to get out in time!
You can grapple with gravity as you leap to new levels at Flying Squirrel indoor trampoline park, have a team-based blast at Active Games or engage in a game of laser tag at Lasertopia.
Try tapping into the barbarian within as you sharpen your axe throwing skills at Axe Throwing Winnipeg or Bad Axe Throwing Winnipeg (not a judgement).
Work on your swing or play a round of mini-golf – no matter what the weather is doing – with a visit to Golf Dome.
Spectator sports
If you prefer watching the pros play, Winnipeg is the place to be! Catch the Jets at Bell MTS Place or see the 2019 Grey Cup champs, the Blue Bombers, go for the Rouge at IG Field.
