Living in an apartment doesn’t mean that you have to rule out gardening. Instead, focus on these solutions for a healthy and green apartment-friendly garden. Today we’ve compiled some tips and resources for first-time Brampton apartment gardeners.
Three Picks for Favourite Apartment Plants
Amaryllis plants are easy to maintain flowering bulbs. Grow these inside or outdoors on a balcony. These plants are so trouble-free that even a gardener with the palest of green thumbs can succeed. The amaryllis blooms come in many beautiful varieties including various shades of red, white, pink, salmon and orange. Some even flower in a combination of pink, red and white. Start these from a bulb and keep the pots well watered for these plants to thrive. Fertilize every month for best results, although amaryllis is known to succeed without.
African Violets do well anywhere and are known to thrive on a cozy windowsill. The pretty purple flowers don’t have a specific flowering season and can bloom almost the whole year around. These plants prefer year-round heat and less light than the average flowering plant.
Spider Plants can brighten up your apartment even though it does well even in low-light conditions. This one is tough and will even put up with a less-than-consistent watering schedule. A spider plant can grow in a pot or trailing basket with little care. Start one of these from a root using a glass of water or buy a starter plant and we promise it will grow.

Local Garden Resources & Nurseries
If you’d like to garden outside of your apartment, join one of two Brampton community gardens currently operating in the city or consider starting your own.
Two local Brampton Garden centres include: Humber Nurseries (8386 Hwy 50 Brampton) or John van Wissen Nurseries & Garden Centre (2547 Embleton Rd.). Brampton is also home to the Chinguacosy Garden Club that meets monthly to listen to guest speakers, host flower shows and garden tours. It’s a great opportunity to meet like-minded people.
