Essential Kitchen Gadgets

Share:

There are certain tools that every chef should stock in the kitchen. The right stuff can really make a big impact when preparing meals. Here are Hazelview Properties’ tips to get kitted out in the kitchen.

The Absolute Basics
First and foremost, a kitchen needs the following items. Most of these pieces don’t need any explanation, but here’s a quick checklist for the minimum items to cook in your kitchen.  A six piece place setting is a great place to start but a kitchen collection can be built based on the number of members in a household, or the amount of entertaining one does.

  • Large Plates
  • Small Plates
  • Rimmed soup/pasta bowls
  • Mugs
  • Cereal Bowls
  • Highball glasses
  • All-purpose wineglasses, or stemless wine glasses (can also double to serve cocktails)
  • Can opener
  • Wine/bottle opener
  • Utensil settings (fork, knife, teaspoon and tablespoon)

Here are some additional essentials that will increase the likeliness of success in the kitchen:

Pot & Pans
It’s tempting to buy a huge 12-piece set of pots but you probably don’t really need them all. Steer clear of the aluminum variety; the pieces are affordable but offer little insulation so your meals tend to burn and stick. Look for a simple 7.5 or 10-inch skillet. If your budget allows, select pots made of cast iron or stainless steel.  The pros recommend a Dutch oven and a medium size stainless steel pan at minimum. For those who love hosting, consider a casserole pan for larger portions.

Colander
This is needed for favourites such as boiled potatoes, steamed vegetables and pasta; a kitchen simply can’t do without a good colander.  Shop for a solid piece made from durable stainless steel. It should be large enough for everyday cooking. A handle is also important to keep the chef at arm’s length from the steam.

Knives
Three knives are needed in every kitchen: a chef’s knife, a paring knife and a bread knife. Look for knives that are one piece with an integrated blade. You’ll use the chef’s knife for larger chopping jobs, the smaller paring knife for precision and a serrated knife to slice bread and soft food. Keep your kitchen investments sharp and find a sharpening steel.

Veggie Peeler
Pick up a quality vegetable peeler in stainless steel or ceramic. Even for those comfortable with a knife, this is an important piece to have for speed and efficiency.

Cutting Boards
Only two boards are needed for the kitchen.  A plastic chopping board should be used for meats such as chicken or fish, and a good wooden board should be kept on hand for use with a serrated knife.

Remember, these suggestions don’t need to cost an arm and a leg. Instead, keep an eye out for deals in discount stores or hunt for bargains in thrift shops.
