Popsicles are a fun throwback to your favourite childhood summer snack. Forget the over-sugared offerings from the store and elect for a healthier icy cold pop of flavour. Here are a few recipes selected by the Hazelview Properties team for keeping cool in Cambridge, Ontario during the summer months.

There aren’t many materials needed for preparing popsicles. An ice pop mold can be purchased from most speciality kitchen stores - stop by a store at the Southworks Outlets (64 Grand Avenue South) or the Bay Cambridge (355 Hespler Rd.). Alternatively, paper cups or plastic shooter glasses can be used with the addition of a wooden stir stick.

During Ontario’s growing season, make the effort to incorporate as many summer-fresh ingredients as possible. With a quick growing season, strawberries make for a flavourful addition to any recipe. Canadian Living has an excellent 5-Minute Strawberry Pops recipe that makes 4-6 servings. It also incorporates Greek yogurt sweetened with a swirl of honey. Keep an eye out for other seasonal fruits at the Cambridge Farmers’ Market (40 Dickson Sweet) to incorporate into the recipes.

Even dieters can join in on this trendy summer treat. There are a number of low calorie options that don’t compromise on flavour. Eating Well Online has compiled a number of kitchen-tested 100-calorie freezer pops. The nine recipes range in flavours including simple and sweet offerings or savoury Chunky Peach Popsicles that incorporate 1 or 2 teaspoons of fresh chopped basil. Fruit always makes a great sweetener, and this Watermelon-Blueberry Ice pop recipe uses whole blueberries for an amazing burst of flavour.

For a more advanced recipe, try Rosemary and Pink Grapefruit popsicles. This take on icy treats comes from New Zealand blogger, My Darling Lemon Thyme. This is a somewhat complicated recipe but worth the extra effort. There’s something for everyone, and the pictures are sure to get your mouth watering.

What’s more adult than an ice pop with a hint of spirits added? These recipes are great fun for a gathering of friends on an especially muggy evening. Recipes only require a third of an ounce of liquor per mold. Add too much and the mixture will not freeze and will simply stay in slush form. Try mojitos with fresh mint for a refreshing treat or experiment with a savoury recipe that’s perfect for brunch with a Bloody Mary popsicle. Modify recipes to taste – why not try the mojitos with dark rum or add a splash of clam juice for homemade clamato in the Bloody Mary recipe.
