Tools for planning the perfect pool workout

Share:

Looking for an easy, fun and effective workout? Exercising in water is the perfect low impact activity that packs a big punch! Hazelview’s Cambridge community has an on-site swimming pool that makes it easy and convenient to get fit close to home. Try the following tips and tricks for planning the perfect pool workout.

Have a Workout Plan
Before jumping into the pool it’s important to have a basic workout structure in mind. You do not necessarily need a full written workout with every detail, but at least the basic outline of what you are looking to accomplish. With water workouts this typically includes an easy warm-up, a main set that includes both cardio and toning exercises, and a cool-down. It’s also important to note that interval training is much more efficient and effective than plain old continuous swimming. Interval training (repetitions of shorter distances at higher intensities) is very effective at building cardiovascular endurance, leading to a better water workout.

Different Strokes
Although the saying ‘different strokes for different folks’ is a popular one, when it comes to your water workout you really benefit from using all four of the swimming strokes. These include freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Each one of these different strokes works a different muscle group and learning to perform each of them will give you a better workout. Hazelview’s on-site swimming pool at our Cambridge community at 204 Hespeler Road is the perfect place to learn the different swimming strokes for a great workout.

Pool Etiquette
If you are going to use your apartment’s pool for a workout it’s crucial that you understand proper pool etiquette. Make sure you adhere to established rules of your particular apartment building, which can usually be found posted up at the gate door. Remember that the pool is for public use, so it’s probably best to perform your swim exercises during non-peak hours, such as first thing in the morning or later in the evening.

Pool Routine for Every Level
There are easy and fun pool routines for every level of swimmer, whether you are a beginner or at an advanced level. You’ll blast fat while sculpting major muscle groups. Check out Fitness Magazine’s guide on Swimming Exercises for Every Level. If you are a beginning swimmer you might want to look into purchasing a kickboard as an aid to help you build up your endurance and strength. Sport Chek is only a 12-minute walk from Hazelview’s Cambridge community and is a great place to pick up all of your swimming essentials including bathing suits, goggles, kickboards and more.

Get fit and have fun with a low-impact swimming workout. Swimming is a fantastic way to work out all of your major muscle groups, burn fat and blast calories.
